As Halloween is just around the corner, it’s time to make sure your yard is ready for trick-or-treaters Tuesday night. Once you’ve decorated your lawn and bought bags of candy to hand out, the only thing left to do is make sure your yard is safe for the children and visitors.
Debris
The last thing you want is to have children get hurt when walking through your yard. Before Halloween night, be sure to do a thorough clean up of your front yard, and anywhere that the kids may walk. Rake up the leaves, remove branches, and be sure to clean up any animal droppings if you have a pet.
Decorations
While decorations are an essential part of Halloween, you don’t want them to be in the walkway of your trick-or-treaters. Create a safe pathway for your visitors to walk on to get to the front door, removing any extra decorations that may get in the way. Also, remove any lawn furniture or year-round decorations, such as flower pots and gnomes.
Tools
Make sure all of your gardening and yard tools are safely stored away so that no curious kids can find them. Also, make sure your sprinkler system is not set to go off, as they will create some pretty upset children and pretty angry parents. If your sprinkler system has above-ground heads, be sure to light them up so no little kids will trip.
Keep Pets Indoors
While many people love pets, some children are afraid or could be allergic to your animal. Keep them indoors, in a safe location as not to scare your visitors.
Lighting
Lighting is not only an excellent way to create a spooky ambiance, but it is also essential for safety. Safelights, such as LEDs, glow sticks, and mini yard spotlights are a great way to keep your yard illuminated. Also, you can incorporate lighting into your decorations, such as Jack O’ Lanterns. While candles can be used inside the pumpkins, using LED lighting inserts is a much safer option. You can even find flickering lights that cast a similar effect of a candle.
