Frozen pipes can be a big problem in the winter time.

Did you know that winter water damage is the second most frequently filed insurance claim in the US after hail damage? In fact, nearly half of all homeowners unfortunately experience water damage during their ownership. While winter water damage can take a toll on a home, 93% of the time this damage is avoidable if certain steps are taken. Read on to discover how to stop winter water damage before it can take root.

Protect Pipes From Freezing

Frozen pipes can cause major winter water damage. In fact, if a pipe cracks as much as even an eighth of an inch, it can leak up to 250 gallons of water a day. You can protect your pipes from freezing in a few ways. Insulating exposed pipes with foam sleeves as well as making sure basements, crawl spaces, and garages are well-insulated can also protect pipes. Be sure to keep your thermostat at 65 degrees at least during freezes, even when you are not home, to prevent damage to your pipes and potentially your home.

The Dangers Clogged Gutters Pose

There are two ways that clogged gutters can potentially cause issues. Clogged gutters can overflow and cause water to pool around the foundation of your home. This can leak into the basement and do damage to the structure of your home. In the winter, clogged gutters can also cause ice dams to form on your roof. This extra weight can potentially cause your roof to collapse. In an ideal situation, your attic should be at least five-ten degrees warmer than the air temperature outside, so consider adding extra insulation to your attic to prevent winter water damage.

Always Act Quickly

If you notice any leaking, be sure to work quickly to fix it to prevent water damage. If left alone, water damage can lead to mold and mildew and potentially even destroy the structural integrity of your home. Waiting can lead to extensive, expensive, and invasive repairs.
